Today
is the anniversary of the death of our late Grand Master, the Servant
of God Fra' Andrew Bertie, who died on this day in 2008.
Having become a teacher after national service, Oxford, and a stint in journalism, Fra' Andrew took solemn vows as a Knight of Justice in 1981, and was elected as the 78th Grand Master in 1988, the second Englishman to hold the office.
His successor, Fra' Matthew Festing, said of Fra' Andrew at the opening of his Cause of Beatification, that those who knew him "will never forget his modesty, his wide-ranging knowledge of things both spiritual and temporal, his generosity of spirit and his understanding of what commitment to caring for those in need means. He practised this charity all his life, he inspired so many of us, and he has left us a shining example: tuitio fidei, obsequium pauperum. The one with the other."
The 6pm Mass at the London Oratory will be offered the repose of his soul and that God, by giving us a sign through Fra' Andrew's intercession, will show him to have been numbered among the saints.
We particularly ask Fra' Andrew's intercession at this time for the Order and its leaders.
